** EXTRA EXTRA URGENT: CALLS NEEDED NOW!, early Tue to STOP the Transportation Corridors bill **

SB 7068 Transportation by Sen. Lee is on the agenda in the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Call committee members listed below and urge them to vote NO on this bill.

The proposed expressway/turnpike proposals may well be the most environmentally detrimental legislation being proposed this year. If built they would lead to massive sprawl in some of the areas we can afford it the least.

SB 7068 shifts money away from where it can be used for education, hurricane recovery, and state parks to fund three toll roads through rural Florida. These toll roads will be able to include water and sewer infrastructure in addition to transportation and will seed an explosion of sprawl. Landscape and wildlife habitat will be fragmented and water resources and watersheds will be compromised.

Please call these Senators Monday or early Tuesday. Phone calls are more effective than emails. Also, look at the counties represented by the committee members. If you live in a Senator’s district, be sure to say so! Constituents are very important to legislators. Tell them politely, but firmly, why you don’t want these roads built. Be prepared to speak to staff or to leave a voicemail. Ask Sen. Lee (the sponsor of SB 7068) to please withdraw his bill.

WHY is this a BAD BILL?
>> Hurricane evacuation. A million cars on the road in bad weather… what could possibly go wrong?
>> The Florida Panther’s habitat in Collier, Highlands, and Big Cypress carved up by roads just when they need to adapt to climate change.
>> Watershed features affecting drainage, aquifer recharge, and wetlands – all at risk
>> Transit and planning relieve congestion, not building roads.

Call these Senators today to urge them to vote NO on SB 7068 Transportation.
