January 2022 Meeting – Travel to Antarctica with us!

Want to go to Antarctica without leaving the warmth of your home? Well, you are in luck! Our speaker this month will take you along his journey. On December 30, 2001, Sierra Club member Joe Young joined a cruise to the Antarctic peninsula. The ship was the Loffe, a Russian icebreaker class research vessel that had been modified to take tourists to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. He left Ushuaia, Argentina, crossed the always stormy Drake passage, celebrated New Years eve, and explored numerous sites on the peninsula. The ship stayed safely away from dangerous land, and ventured to landfall in Zodiacs (rubberized powered rafts). The highlight of the adventure was finding adult orcas (aka killer whales) apparently teaching young orcas how to hunt seals!
