August Meeting – The Human Habitat: Building communities for people and planet

Just like every creature, humans need a habitat to survive and thrive. How we build the places that we live, work and relax affects both our health and the health of our natural environment. It’s easy to take our built environment for granted, but in fact we make choices individually and collectively that shape how our own habitat functions and feels. For example, whether and how far we walk, bike, ride, or drive to work and other destinations is profoundly affected by how we build our cities; this in turn affects emissions and how much land we pave. Eliza Harris Juliano will discuss what the science of city planning tells us about how to live better and reduce our environmental impacts.

Eliza Harris Juliano is the Director of Urbanism at Canin Associates and serves on the board of the Congress for the New Urbanism, a national nonprofit that helps communities to build places people love.https://www.cnu.org/eliza-harris-juliano

Stop the Leaks in the 2016 Water Bills

Please call your state legislators today (http://www.myfloridahouse.com/…/Repre…/myrepresentative.aspx) and urge them to “support amendments to eliminate loopholes and deficiencies in the 2016 water bills,” SB 552 by Sen. Dean and HB 7005 by Rep. Caldwell, that will be considered next week. Deliver the Message: “Support amendments to eliminate loopholes and defiencies in the 2016 water bills.”

In December, Sierra Club Florida and other Floridians’ Clean Water Declaration campaign coalition partners, delivered a letter signed by 106 organizations and businesses to Florida Senate President Andy Gardiner and House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, calling for real protection of the state’s imperiled waterways. The letter was also sent to all 160 of Florida’s state legislators urging them to amend SB 552 and HB 7005. But we need your voice.

The ‘Find Your Representative’ system will take your address supplied and deliver your State House Member, State Senate Member, United States Congressional Member and supply details on the United States Senate members.
