Bike ride from Apopka to Winter Gardens: 32 miles total round trip
• What we’ll do
The West Orange Trail is a long multi-use rail trail owned by Orange County Parks and Recreation. We will meet in Apopka, behind the Catfish Place Restaurant, at the Apopka Station. The paved trail goes to Winter Gardens where we will stop for a cold beer! The trail is built on old railroad alignments. There are four main stations on the West Orange Trail, each providing parking, restroom facilities, bike racks and drinking fountains. All have picnic tables and playground and some, with concession stands.
• What to bring
Water bottle, bike helmet, snacks for the ride when we stop to rest and a few dollar for a beer or cold drink.
• Important to know
Twenty-five years ago, Winter Garden, a city 15 miles west of Orlando, had a faded, decaying downtown. Businesses had moved out; people and vitality had followed. But then, area leaders made two things happen: The West Orange Trail, a 22-mile bicycle trail running right down main street, opened in 1999. A $4.5 million project to preserve the historic downtown was completed a few years later. The West Orange Trail goes down the landscaped park-like median.
